I was reviewing my old entries earlier today...

A couple weeks ago, I talked about wanting to make "work to hang out with." Now, I'd like to be more specific with what I mean. Why? What's the point? Who cares?

train station 1. plum flower

Recently I took some photographs at train stations. Each station has a different symbol as well as a different type of photograph.

train station 2. kayak

This strategy made me remember what I call "sticky for memory" work. It works through time...

Present
Enhancing the feeling of being in a place ... i.e. "Wow these plum flowers are beautiful ... I wonder if there are special plum trees outside nearby?"

Non-present
Helping you recall this past moment in the future by remembering the specific sensorial (all 5 senses!) details that went along with it ... i.e. "Remember when we were in that station that's near the river last week, I think it has a kayak symbol?"

train station 3. blue rainbows
audio memory anchors

Anyway... maybe there is a designer/artist working behind the scenes in a subtle way, helping these details truly flourish in hopes they will make present, past, and future richer. There are fun decisions to make, like "What's more sticky-for-memory for this place... a cow or a cloud?"

I also wonder about short- and long-term memory. Like here in the train stations, someone made this system most likely specifically for short-term memory. So you can remember where you were... i.e. Maybe you see the pink sparkle of the plum blossom out the window, and realize "I am home!" But I like thinking about working for longer-term as well... maybe it's not as pragmatic or systematized. More ingrained with place history and nuance, like a special monument, or even custom smell. More on this later...
